chicken-shit
   A generally insulting term used mainly in the USA. In Boulevard Nights, by Dewey Gram, ‘you chicken-shit’ is applied to the members of a gang by one of its members, and possibly refers to ‘chicken’ in its cowardly sense. In Mordecai Richler’s Cocksure it is used by one man to another as an insult, but there is no suggestion of cowardice. The Choirboys, by Joseph Wambaugh, has a suspect saying to a policeman in Los Angeles: ‘You shot me in the back, you chickenshit!’
